Messiaen and other members of La Jeune France were asked to write music for state celebrations after Joan of Arc's Feast Day was declared a public holiday in Vichy France. [Hill & Simeone, pp. 106, 109]
The Te Deum is an early Latin hymn, traditionally ascribed to St. Ambrose and St. Augustine.
